Frequently Asked Questions about Dermabrasion

What is dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing procedure that removes acne scarring, other types of scars, hyperpigmentation, some types of wrinkles, and even tattoos. Dermabrasion removes the very top layer of skin, allowing new skin to grow in its place.

Am I a candidate for dermabrasion?
Typical candidates for dermabrasion are looking to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by acne, accidents or previous surgery, or to smooth out fine facial wrinkles.

At what age can dermabrasion be performed?
Dermabrasion can be performed at any age, with the youngest patients typically being teenagers.

Does dermabrasion hurt?
Dermabrasion can be painful, so patients can expect some discomfort during and after the procedure.

When will I be able to see the results?
As the skin heals, the fresh, pink skin will begin to emerge. After a few weeks, this redness will fade and the new skin will appear.

How is a dermabrasion performed?
During dermabrasion, the skin is carefully sanded or abraded using a wire brush. When the procedure is over, the face will be covered with a thin film of antibiotic ointment or a burn cream to protect the newly resurfaced tissue as it heals.

How long will pinkness and swelling last?
About a week following the procedure, patients will notice a significant decrease in postoperative swelling. After about two to three weeks, swelling should be completely resolved. The skin may maintain its pinkish hue for between six and eight weeks, but make-up can be used to camouflage the rosy hue until it settles.

What should I expect during recovery?
Following your procedure, you will be given instructions about taking proper care of the treated area, including proper cleanliness, how to change your dressings, the use of cold packs and more.

Are the results permanent?
The results of dermabrasion are permanent, but this depends on how well you care for your skin after your treatment. To maintain results, avoid the sun and smoking. The skin will continue to age, but dermabrasion can help it appear younger and more rejuvenated.

Are there any alternatives or complementary procedures?
Sometimes patients choose to have dermabrasion performed in conjunction with other procedures such as facelift, scar revision, or chemical peel. If you are considering other rejuvenation procedures, discuss your options with Dr. Kim at your consultation.
