Rhinoplasty Chicago

Rhinoplasty refers to plastic surgery performed on the nose and is more commonly referred to as “nose reshaping” or a “nose job.” This is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure to change the appearance of the nose, the central facial feature that is most responsible for creating a harmonious balance among all our facial features. The goal of a rhinoplasty is to improve the proportion of the nose to achieve an overall more attractive facial appearance.

Rhinoplasty surgery improves the width, size, and/or profile of the nose. It corrects the nasal tip, nostrils, or overall asymmetry or deviation. It is possible that rhinoplasty can be covered by your insurance if you experience impaired breathing or other health issues related to nasal structural abnormalities. If you are interested in cosmetic nose surgery, set up a consultation with Chicago aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. John Kim.

Choosing Rhinoplasty

Patients opt for rhinoplasty for a host of reasons. Some are displeased with their natural nose and desire a change in shape, size, and overall appearance. Others are unhappy with how their nose has changed over time as they have aged. Still others have a breathing problem that has to do with structural issues with the nose and wish to have these corrected, or they wish to correct a distorted nose resulting from injury. If you are unhappy with your nose for these or a similar reason, rhinoplasty could be an appropriate treatment for you. A brief list of indications for rhinoplasty include:

  • An asymmetrical nose caused by injury
  • A crooked or off-center nose
  • A nasal tip that is enlarged or drooping
  • A very wide nose or very flared nostrils
  • A large bump on the nasal bridge
  • An oversized nose that appears too large for the face

To be considered as a rhinoplasty candidate, your facial growth must be complete. This usually occurs by age 13. Rhinoplasty patients should be in good physical health, should not smoke, and should have specific but realistic expectations for this type of cosmetic surgery.

Upon meeting with Dr. John Kim for your nose surgery consultation, he will conduct close examination of your nose and will take precise measurements. You will disclose to him your expectations for surgery, and he will develop a surgical plan that best fits your goals and his expertise. He will discuss with you both the risks and benefits of this type of surgery so that you can make the most informed decision possible.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

rhino-diagram-1Dr. Kim utilizes two different incision types for his rhinoplasty procedures. In a “closed” procedure, the incision is hidden inside the nose, versus in an “open” procedure, the incision is made across the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. Dr. Kim will discuss his incision choice with you at the time of your personalized consultation at his downtown Chicago offices on the Northwestern University campus.

After he makes the incision, Dr. Kim gently raises the soft tissues and reshapes the nose. Cartilage from other areas of your body is used to augment your new nasal structure. Dr. Kim typically takes this cartilage from the partition in the middle of the nose, or else from behind the ear or from the ribs. During this part of the procedure, he will straighten your septum to achieve better symmetry and to reduce any breathing problems you may have.

Recovering From Rhinoplasty Surgery

Dr. Kim typically performs this type of surgery as an outpatient procedure, so patients often return home the same day as their surgery. Directly after surgery, you should be able to take care of yourself. To facilitate the healing process, Dr. Kim will commonly place some tubes or packing inside your nose as well as bandages on the outside. This splint device will help hold the cartilage and bone in the new shape as it heals. The splint is usually in place for about seven days, and then Dr. Kim will remove it. After surgery, Dr. Kim will send you home with specific instructions on how to take care of your newly shaped nose after surgery. He will often provide you with medication to take orally or apply topically to aid healing and reduce your infection risk.

During your initial consultation and then after surgery, Dr. Kim will explain what to expect during your individual recovery period. He will dictate any activity or driving restrictions, and he will inform you about how much pain to expect. It is imperative that you do not subject your new incisions and newly shaped nose to any abrasion, force, or undue motion during this crucial time of healing the few days or weeks after surgery. Dr. Kim will also likely recommend that you keep your head in as upright a position as possible following surgery so as to minimize any swelling that may occur if you were to lay down.

It is possible that you will have some bruising after surgery that can last up to two weeks. It is usually ok to apply some makeup to the area to conceal the discoloration, but you must be sure to use excessively minimal force during application. As you swelling and/or bruising subsides, you will start to notice visible aesthetic improvements with your nose. It may take several months before the swelling subsides completely and your nose is completely refined, but rest assured that your results should be permanent. There is the possibility that your nasal cartilage may naturally reshape and rearrange over time.

Rhinoplasty FAQs

What is rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure where the size, shape, and structure of the nose are altered. A rhinoplasty is commonly performed for cosmetic purposes, but also to relieve breathing problems and issues. A rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose, reduce the size of the nostrils, improve the profile of the nose, and more.

What makes someone a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Good candidates for a rhinoplasty are looking to improve the appearance and/or function of the nose, are physically healthy, and have realistic expectations.

Can rhinoplasty be performed at any age?

Rhinoplasty should not be performed on younger patients until their nose has finished growing. Typically, the nose is finished growing at the age of 14.

How much time does rhinoplasty surgery take?

In most cases, rhinoplasty surgery can be completed within one to two hours. Sometimes the procedure takes longer in revision or difficult cases.

Will I have noticeable scars after rhinoplasty?

Scarring after a rhinoplasty depends on the surgical technique. If a patient is undergoing closed rhinoplasty, in which the incisions are located on the inside of the nose, there will be no noticeable scarring. If a patient is undergoing open rhinoplasty, there will be a small, well-concealed scar located between the nostrils on the underside of the nose.

How much pain can I expect from rhinoplasty?

After surgery, patients may experience mild discomfort in the head and nasal area. Patients may expect some discomfort as the head and nose may ache during the first few days after surgery. Medication will be prescribed as necessary so patients are not too uncomfortable.

What sort of recovery is there with rhinoplasty?

Swelling and bruising is common, and patients may experience some discomfort. Some bleeding can also occur. Stitches, dressings, and splints are usually removed within one week. The majority of the swelling will clear up in about three weeks.

How much time will I need to take off work?

Most rhinoplasty patients find that they can return to work within a week. The exact amount of time will depend on the extent of your rhinoplasty surgery, your pain tolerance and the physical demands of your work. Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. John Kim will advise you on when you can return to work and other routine activities.
