Botox vs. Fillers

Botox and fillers fall into the same category of treatment; they both seek to reduce wrinkles and give a more youthful, vivacious appearance. They are also administered in the same manner via injection. The way in which they provide you with a younger appearance differs between the two injectables.

Botox is made from bacteria. This bacteria is called botulinum toxin, hence the name Botox. Botox has been around for about 20 years and has uses far beyond plastic surgery. Botox has been used to treat migraines, neurological disorders, and other medical conditions. Botox works by causing muscle relaxation in the fine muscles in your face. When these muscles are unable to move, wrinkles are less pronounced. Botox works locally so it will not numb your entire face, only the muscles near the injection site experience relaxation. Wrinkles that become pronounced when you face moves, such as when you frown and develop wrinkles between your brows, are prime targets for Botox treatment. After the injection the results are noticeable with in about two weeks. There is almost no recovery time for Botox injections and you can resume daily activity immediately. Botox results usually last around 3 to 4 months.

Fillers are another injectable that aim to reduce wrinkles but fillers are usually used for finer wrinkles that are the result of collagen breakdown. Filler is also approved to plump the lips and the cheeks and sometimes can be used in scar management. While Botox comes from a single bacteria, fillers come in a variety of different forms such as hyaluronic acid and collagen. Depending on the type of filler you are injected with you can expect that results will last anywhere from 4 months to about 2 years. There is a permanent filler option called polymethylmethacrylate beads and it is the only FDA approved permanent filler.

Another factor to consider is price. On average fillers will cost a bit more than Botox; filler cost also depends on the type of filler that you want.

Your choice depends on what type of wrinkles you are looking to smooth out, how long you want your results to last, and how much you are willing to spend. Contact our clinic for more information on pricing and to determine which choice is best for you and your aesthetic goals!
