Fillers vs. a Lower Blepharoplasty

For many, the bags under their eyes are points of insecurity for them. Under-eye bags can cause an individual to look more tired or aged than they actually are. There are options to alleviate these cosmetic concerns. Two procedures are available to reduce the unaesthetic appearance of the under eye area: lower eyelid surgery (also known as a lower blepharoplasty) and filler.

A Lower Blepharoplasty
This surgery involves reshaping or removing fat under the eye in order to smooth the contour of the under eye. Dr. Kim will use a transconjunctival incision that is within the lower eyelid to prevent any scarring. The procedure reduces lines or ridges in the under-eye area that may cause a shadow, making the eyes appear sunken in. You can see Dr. Kim performing this procedure on his Instagram if you click here; please note that this is an intraoperative surgical video and some may find the content very graphic. This procedure if often combined with an upper blepharoplasty to enhance the overall appearance and brighten the eyes. This procedure takes around an hour and a half and recovery time for this procedure is usually around two or three weeks as bruising or swelling fades.

Dermal Fillers
Another option to improve under-eye aesthetics is the use of dermal fillers. Some patients are concerned about going under the knife, and this alternative provides a less invasive means to improve self-confidence. Hyaluronic acid is injected into the eye bag area to smooth out the area, minimizing shadows. Patients often find this a relatively painless procedure. The results of fillers are instantaneous so you will leave the office feeling and looking your best and you will see your final result after about two weeks once the fillers have settled. One drawback to consider is that the filler will not last forever. Eventually your body will metabolize the filler and you may need another appointment. Although not permanent, filler in the under eye area tends to last longer than other areas such as the forehead and lips which we move more especially when talking and expressing emotions. Since the under eye area is relatively stagnant, fillers can last up to 1 year.
