After Your Tummy Tuck

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to remove and or tighten loose skin in the abdominal region. In conjunction with this procedure, the abdominal wall muscles can be tightened at the same time depending on the amount of separation between the muscles known as diastasis. Different types of abdominoplasties can be done depending on the amount of skin to be removed, they are often called “mini tummy tucks” or “extended tummy tucks.”

Am I an Ideal Candidate?

Tummy tuck procedures can be life changing but not suitable for all. The ideal candidate for this type of procedure is often a patient who has experienced weight loss or pregnancy, and resulted in excess, loose skin in the abdomen region. This loose skin does not respond well to diet and exercise and that is when these candidates turn to surgical options to achieve their aesthetic goals. Overall, a consultation with your board-certified plastic surgeon is important in determining what procedure(s) are most suitable for your aesthetic goals.

How does it work?

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and takes anywhere between two to four hours depending on the extent of skin removal. An incision is made which allows for removal of excess skin and fat as well as tightening of abdominal muscles. During the procedure the belly button is repositioned depending on the extent of the case. Throughout the procedure, liposuction can be added to increase the amount of fat removed. After the surgical changes are made, the incisions are closed, and you are taken into recovery.
