After breast surgery some women are worried about scarring. Besides being visually unappealing some scars may form in problematic fashion causing pain, reducing function, and creating disfiguration [2]. There is not a consensus in the scientific literature to point to a treatment that universally can completely eliminate scarring.

Dr. Kim feels that preoperative planning before undergoing breast surgery is crucial to reducing the need for reoperation later on. Reoperations can be costly and subject patients to additional risks. Measuring the breast volume before surgery will allow the surgeon to measure the exact size needed for an implant;

Large datasets are crucial for helping surgeons use data to make decisions by offering insight into what the risk may be of a given complication based on a large population. These databases are invaluable because they give information about what percent of people who have a given procedure are at risk for a given complication,

Dr. Kim and colleagues recently published “Outcomes After Elevation of Serratus Anterior Fascia During  Prosthetic Breast Reconstruction” in the Annals of Plastic Surgery. Immediate prosthetic breast reconstruction is becoming increasingly popular; this approach often involves the placement of an implant below the pectoralis muscle1.
